In the highlands of Jalisco, tequila is more than a drink—it’s an expression of earth and ancestry. With that in mind, Mijenta has announced the release of Maestra Selection No. 2, the second expression in its limited-edition series crafted under the guidance of Maestra Tequilera Ana María Romero. Scheduled to launch September 9, 2025, the bottling ventures into uncharted territory: a single tequila built from the character of all five states within Tequila’s Denomination of Origin.
The Five States of Tequila
For context, tequila can legally be produced in only five Mexican states—Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. Each carries its own ecosystems, soils, altitudes, and agricultural traditions, shaping agave in dramatically different ways. Romero, who began her career in wine, applied the logic of terroir to agave, asking what it might mean to taste Mexico’s diversity in one bottle.
“Mexico is a country of immense beauty, both culturally and naturally, and this tequila offered an opportunity to celebrate both,” Romero said. “From the caramel and spice of Guanajuato, to the citrus and red fruit of Michoacán, to the preserved fruits and almonds of Nayarit, to the mint and sage of Tamaulipas, to the herbal and citrus of Jalisco—each state speaks its own language through agave.”
A Masterful Blending Process
The production was as meticulous as it was ambitious. Agaves were sourced from single estates in each state, then distilled separately before Romero undertook the painstaking task of blending them into a cohesive, complex whole. The result, bottled at 40% ABV, reveals aromas of caramelized coconut, vanilla, roasted pineapple, and lemon zest, interwoven with cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and the faintest breath of fresh-cut grass. A tequila that moves like a prism, shifting from caramelized fruit to herbal brightness to spice-laden depth, without ever losing its grounding in cooked agave.
Art and Symbolism in the Design

Adding to the release’s artistry, Mexico City-based artist Sophia Castellanos was commissioned to create the label and packaging. Castellanos drew on the mythic and natural worlds, giving each state an emblematic spirit animal: the coyote for Guanajuato, the hummingbird for Jalisco, the butterfly for Michoacán, the deer for Nayarit, and Tenek, the half-fish, half-crocodile god, for Tamaulipas. Together they adorn a five-sided bottle—a deliberate tribute to the five states that birthed this expression.
Pricing and Availability
Priced at $74.99 for a 750ml bottle, Mijenta Maestra Selection No. 2 will be available in limited quantities through the brand’s website and select U.S. retailers. Like the first Maestra Selection, which explored innovation within tradition, this second edition underscores Mijenta’s vision: tequila as a cultural dialogue between past and present, local soil and global palate.
A Celebration of Terroir in a Glass
At its heart, the release poses a simple but radical question: what happens when Mexico’s entire tequila map is distilled into a single glass? The answer, if Romero’s blend is any indication, is a tequila that honors difference while finding unity—a sip of Mexico in its full, multifaceted character.
