Stjärtilleriet

Stjärtilleriet - Stockholm

Stjärtilleriet brings Stockholm’s most elegant neighborhood a bit of childish fun, while also displaying true craftsmanship behind the bar.

Stjärtilleriet is anything but you would expect from elegant Östermalm. Despite its location inside the Swedish Army Museum’s Artilleriet restaurant, it might be the neighborhood’s “most UNserious cocktail bar” and when it comes to designs and concepts, it certainly fits that mold. However, the drinks themselves are anything but, delivering delicious flavors alongside serious creativity.

Stjärtilleriet looks to bring out the child in all of us, from tablecloths made to draw on to drinks garnished with penises. Yet, the chefs behind the drinks are obviously true professionals. An unpretentious cocktail bar with drinks this good is not easy to find.

Bar manager Hugo Örn tells us…

Please describe Stjärtilleriet as if you’re explaining the experience of walking through the doors and ordering your first drink.

Stjärtilleriet is located inside a beautiful restaurant called Artilleriet, so the first thing our new guests will lay their eyes on is a fairly large dining room with lots of burning candles and a sea of dinner tables. A new guest is probably a bit confused by this since it might not look like what people see in pictures or what they expect from our marketing. But help is on the way, Artilleriets head waiter will greet them and bring them just around the corner to a more playful Stjärtilleriet. Here the tables are decorated in a more playful sense, pencils, silicone coasters and a tablecloth made to draw on welcomes the guest. Our menu is childish and naughty and impossible to ignore, right away they will hopefully feel comfortable to bring out their childish self and to order a drink with flavor combinations that on paper look dumb enough for a child to have come up with but will of course work out.

How would you describe Stjärtilleriet in a three-word text to a friend that you’re trying to convince to join you?

Creative, cute, controversial

Other than Stjärtilleriet, what else is happening in the neighborhood that you’re in?

There are a lot of great places nearby, it would be hard to name them all without making this into a long list but some honorable mentions are definitely Lucy’s Flower Shop that in our opinion makes the best cocktails in Stockholm. We also have some great food nearby, one of the Stockholm institutions that have been around for centuries close by is Sturehof. But Rumble/Sway is probably the place where we usually end up after service, always a great vibe and a very fun unpretentious time.

Aside from Happy Hour, when is the best time to get to the bar?

There will always be a mischievous vibe here and we are always gonna give our guests time to chat about what we do. But late nights tend to be a bit more of a party vibe which we think is super fun but at those times we might not have time to run and fetch a unique ingredient that we have in the drink for the guest to smell and taste. I think it’s really up to what you as a person like.

Describe the average drinkers that you serve?

Someone who is tired of the same old same old and is curious and excited about unique experiences regarding flavor but also atmosphere and service.

Please tell us more about your drinks menu.

It’s in your face, both literally and metaphorically. It started with us wanting to make a menu that was a fun experience for the guest and would make the guest a part of the experience. That combined with the simple fact that we are quite childish and immature made us do a coloring book type menu. Now we have left the format of the book and instead we are doing a type of paper table cloth where we also encourage our guests to draw on it. We have 8 signature cocktails at a time which we change up with what’s in season. We have put them in order from the least “weird/unique” to the most “weird/unique”.

What’s your signature drink–or your favorite drink currently on the menu–and why should I order it?

We encourage people to try number 6 on our menu called “IS THIS WHAT SEA CUCUMBER TASTE LIKES?” which is a Seaweed and Cucumber drink with a granita made out of Cucumber, Lacto Fermented Granny Smith Apples and a Distillate of Geranium. Over the granita we pour our Seaweed drink made out of Kelp and Nori, Absolut Elyx Vodka, Elderflower and Timut Pepper. It sounds weirder than it actually is and it’s a great starter for a drink night at Stjärtilleriet.

How much do drinks cost?

179 Swedish Moneyyy or 15€

Is there anything to eat? If so – what’s your favorite dish on the menu?

In the bar we serve snacks and smaller dishes from Artilleriets Kitchen, we have a great Tartar a la Pelle Jansson which is a twist on a classic Swedish dish with Bleak Roe, Pomme Allumettes, Creme Fraiche and shit like that. SUPER YUMMY. If you want a proper meal we can always find a table in the restaurant for you after you’ve had a couple of drinks at Stjärtilleriet, we of course serve all our drinks in the restaurant as well.

What are the distinguishing features of Stjärtilleriet?

Childish, naughty esthetics and unique drinks made from scratch. We’ve been working as chefs in the past without any bartending training so there’s a lot of chef techniques and ingredients and unique flavor combinations that you might not always find in your average drink.

What’s that music we hear playing on the Stjärtilleriet stereo?

All from African Funk to not to noisy punk to old French shit to HipHop to corny 90-00 pop hits. Whatever we feel like really.
