There are stories you can sip, stories that move like honey across your tongue, and then there’s The Source—a 51-year-old Jamaican rum from Appleton Estate that tastes like a love letter to time itself. Announced this week, The Source is the oldest and rarest expression in Appleton’s 275-year history. Only 25 decanters will ever exist, each one a quiet hymn to patience, provenance, and place.
Founded in 1749, Appleton Estate is Jamaica’s beating rum heart, a place where limestone-filtered spring water and single estate sugar cane coalesce under tropical skies. The Source began its life on July 30, 1973, when Master Blender Owen Tulloch filled a single American oak cask. Decades later, his protégé and successor Dr. Joy Spence, the first female Master Blender in the spirits world, would guide it to completion.
Aged entirely in Jamaica’s humid embrace—where the “devil’s share” evaporates at a punishing rate—The Source embodies tropical aging at its most extreme and rewarding. In cooler climates, barrels slumber. Here, they breathe and pulse, yielding flavors at a rate two to three times faster, creating what Dr. Spence calls “a spirit of profound character and soul.”

“Tasting this beautiful expression with Owen over 40 years ago sparked my lifelong passion for the possibilities of aged rum,” Spence says. “This release is a tribute to the artistry, dedication, and spirit of our people.”
Named for the limestone aquifer that nourishes Appleton’s cane fields and shapes its flavor, The Source is more than a rum. It’s a distilled geography lesson, a snapshot of sunlight, riverbeds, and rainforest mist. The liquid reveals deep mahogany hues, with a nose of honeyed spice and a palate that drifts between oak char, citrus zest, and a hint of molasses earthiness.
Each decanter—heart-shaped and fading into aquamarine, echoing the estate’s iconic spring—features a copper sculpture of Jamaica’s national bird, the Doctor Bird. The packaging, adorned with straw marquetry inspired by pressed cane, feels like holding a piece of Nassau Valley itself.
Priced at $70,000, The Source isn’t merely a collector’s bottle; it’s a cultural artifact. To honor Jamaica’s creative spirit, Appleton will also support the Jamaica Art Society’s 2026-2027 In Focus Fellowship, fostering emerging artists and celebrating five decades of Jamaican art through dinners, curated events, and co-branded experiences.
The Source arrives globally in July 2025, standing as Appleton Estate’s ultimate testament to time, tradition, and the unbreakable link between rum and the land that births it.
