The Lost Explorer Mezcal Takes Home Top Prize At Tequila & Mezcal Masters 2021

Lost Explorer Mezcal Masters Taste Masters 2021

The Lost Explorer Mezcal has won the Taste Master award at the Tequila & Mezcal Masters 2021, the competition’s top prize. Put on annually by The Spirits Business, this year’s competition featured over 60 agave spirits.

On top of the Taste Master trophy, which was awarded to The Lost Explorer Mezcal’s Salmiana, the brand also picked up a Gold medal for its Tobala and a Silver for its Espadin at the Tequila & Mezcal Masters 2021.

“Supporting the increased consumer popularity for mezcal, The Lost Explorer Mezcal took home the Taste Master award for its Salmiana expression which impressed the judges more than any other entry across the whole competition,” said The Spirits Business. “A brilliant achievement for The Lost Explorer Mezcal which casts the spotlight on handcrafted, independent mezcals from Oaxaca.”

The Lost Explorer Mezcal has been receiving praise from critics across the globe and also was recently awarded 5 Stars for the Salmiana by the Difford’s Guide and 4.5 stars for both the Tobalá and Espadin.

The Lost Explorer Mezcal launched last October with a core range of three expressions: Salmiana, Tobala, and Espadin. All are handcrafted spirits made from 100% agave cultivated in the sun-soaked Valles Centrales, Oaxaca, Mexico. Co-founded by David de Rothschild and Thor Björgólfsson, the duo set out to create a brand that empowers people to explore and appreciate their environment, foster social good and promote curious living.

In partnership with expert Maestro Mezcalero Don Fortino Ramos, The Lost Explorer Mezcal is a toast to empowering sustainable Mexican enterprise, while protecting the ancient artisanal craft, heritage and biodiversity of Mexico. Harvested in harmony with the elements and in tune with the rhythm of nature, the three uniquely profiled varietals invite people to celebrate the earth and live curiously, exploring the diversity and wonder of the sacred agave.

Espadín, harvested after eight years growth in the arid valleys of Oaxaca, is a subtly sweet and herbaceous well-balanced Mezcal with hints of apple, ripe fruits and a mild smoky layer to finish. The Tobalá, also known as the ‘Explorer Agave’, is harvested after 10 years of growth in arid, shaded, high- altitude canyons. It carries hints of tobacco, cocoa, vanilla and leather and offers a unique balance between wood aromas and umami flavours. Salmiana, which produces a much lower yield, is harvested after 12 years in a high-altitude terroir and is the most herbaceous expression, offering an unexpected yet gentle sweet and spicy profile with hints of green chilli, grapefruit and fresh agave after rainfall.

The Lost Explorer Mezcal can be purchase online via The Lost Explorer Mezcal website or Amazon, in high-end restaurants and cocktail bars, and through specialist off trade retailers, such as The Whiskey Exchange or Old Town Tequila.
